The Australian Government's program provides approximately $258 per kWh of usable battery capacity through Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs).

Note: the battery STC factor steps down every six months until the scheme ends in 2030, and the factor that applies is the one in force on your installation date — not the date you sign the contract.
Synergy network (SWIS) customers receive an additional state rebate on top of the federal STC program:
Synergy customers

10 kWh capacity cap, so the rebate is paid on the first 10 kWh only. VPP + Battery Rewards opt-in is a precondition.
Battery size
At least 5kWh of usable capacity. The rebate is paid per kWh up to a 10kWh cap — a larger battery still qualifies, it just receives the capped maximum
Connected to rooftop solar
The federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount applies to batteries connected to new or existing rooftop solar — so you need panels already, or installed alongside the battery
VPP participation
Must join a Virtual Power Plant — Synergy Battery Rewards, or an approved alternative offered by your battery supplier. The agreement runs two years, after which you can opt out at any time. No VPP means no rebate
Approved products
Battery must be on the Clean Energy Council approved list AND the whole solution listed on Synergy’s Supported Solutions List. Both lists change, so confirm the exact model at quote time

Synergy customer, renting counts
You need a Synergy account and a WA property that’s primarily residential with a reliable internet connection. Renters qualify too, with the landlord’s consent
Installed from 1 July 2025
The rebate isn’t retrospective — batteries installed before 1 July 2025 don’t qualify. Once conditionally approved you have six months to install, or you re-apply
Loan amount: $2,001 to $10,000 per household
Repayment period: 3 to 10 years, with no early-repayment fee
Income requirement: Gross household income under $210,000 per year
VPP required: The loan is only available if you join a VPP, same as the rebate
Loan applications are processed through Plenti, the scheme’s third-party administrator. The loan and the rebate together can’t exceed what the system and installation actually cost — it can’t be cashed out
A Virtual Power Plant connects thousands of home batteries into one coordinated network. When the electricity grid needs extra power during peak demand, your battery can export stored energy and you get paid for it.
Activation credits
Earn 70c per kWh your battery exports during an activation event, capped at your battery’s capacity per event
Energy offset credits
Grid energy you use during the standby window before an event is credited back, calculated from the tariff rates that apply to your usage
How much control you keep
You can set a reserved minimum charge Synergy can’t touch. Events themselves run automatically through your inverter’s cloud software — you aren’t notified beforehand and can’t pick which ones to join
Earnings depend on how much your battery exports during events, so there’s no fixed annual figure. The parameters that bound it:
Credits appear on quarterly activity statements and are applied to your next bill

Your chosen installer submits the rebate application on your behalf. The rebate is deducted from your final invoice.

Once approved, your battery is installed and connected to your chosen VPP program (e.g., Synergy Battery Rewards).
Choose a battery large enough for future needs. You can only claim the rebate once, so upgrading later means paying full price for additional capacity.
The federal battery discount steps down on a half-yearly schedule through to 2030, and from 1 May 2026 it also tapers with battery size — full entitlement to 14kWh, then reduced rates above that. Battery prices are also expected to keep falling, which may offset some of the reduction.
A permanent internet connection is mandatory for VPP participation and system monitoring. Ensure reliable connectivity at your installation location.
Select reputable battery brands with strong warranties. A failed battery cannot be replaced under the rebate program, so quality matters.
