How WattMate works and how we make money

Most comparison sites bury this page. We think it's the most important one on the site, because you can't judge advice until you know who's paying for it. So here it is, plainly.

What we are

WattMate is an independent lead generator for home energy in Western Australia. We help you understand your options — batteries, solar, rebates, your bill — and when you're ready, we connect you with licensed local installers who quote you directly.

We don't sell solar systems or batteries. We don't install them. We don't handle your money. Every price you see on our sites is indicative only: installers quote the actual price, and your contract is with the installer you choose.

How the matching works

  1. You tell us about your home — your suburb, your usage, what you're trying to achieve. The more you share, the better the match; you stay in control of what you provide.
  2. We match you with installers who service your area and handle the kind of system you're after.
  3. Installers contact you with real quotes. You compare them, ask questions, and choose — or choose none of them. There's no obligation at any point, and it costs you nothing.

What installers pay us

Installers pay us a flat $30.00 including GST per accepted lead ($27.27 + GST) — the same figure for every installer, every brand and every system size. The formal version, in full, is on our disclosure page.

That flat fee is the whole revenue model, and it's worth pausing on what it rules out:

  • No brand can pay for placement in our content. Reviews, comparisons and rankings carry no sponsored positions — a battery brand cannot pay us to rank its product above a rival's.
  • Our advice doesn't move with the price of your system. We earn the same per lead whether you install a 5 kWh battery or a 25 kWh one, so we have no reason to talk you into the bigger system.
  • Rebates are never marked up. Government rebates and discounts pass through at their actual value. Always.

What we're not

We're not the installer, so we don't carry installer accreditations ourselves — the installers we match you with hold their own CEC and SAA credentials, and you'll see those where we show installer details. We're not a broker who negotiates on your behalf, and we're not a retailer with stock to move. If you ever see language on our sites that sounds like we're selling you something, tell us — it's a bug, not a business model.

Why this model, honestly

Because it's the one where honest content pays. Our comparisons and reviews only generate leads if you trust them, and you'll only trust them if they're straight with you — including about products we think are overpriced, batteries that don't qualify for the WA rebate, and situations where the right answer is "don't buy anything yet." A flat per-lead fee means the economics reward being right, not being persuasive. Whether our advice actually is impartial is a fair question with its own page: independent solar advice.
