“Independent” is the most over-used word in solar, so it is worth being specific about what it means here — and what it does not.
What independent means here
A flat referral fee, never a percentage
Installers pay us the same flat referral fee for every enquiry — never a percentage of your price. The fee is identical whether you end up with a modest solar system or a full solar-and-battery package, so nothing we show you earns us more.
We're not the installer
WattMate does not sell, supply, install or service equipment, and holds no stock. We have nothing to move and no margin to protect on any brand — the accredited installer you choose does the work and holds the warranty.
Western Australia only
We cover WA, on the SWIS network, rather than spreading thin nationally. Advice about rebates, tariffs and what actually suits a Perth roof only works if it is written for the WA market.
The money is written down
Our disclosure page states the exact fee, who pays it, and what it does not change about your price. You can read it before you give us anything.
Why the funding model is the whole question
Most solar advice you will find is paid for by someone with a preferred outcome. That is not automatically dishonest, but it does mean the incentive is worth understanding before you weigh the advice. Lead generation in this industry has consolidated considerably, and several names that read as independent are now part of much larger groups.
We are paid whether or not you go ahead with an installer, and every installer in the network pays the same flat fee — so none of them can pay to be recommended more often or to jump the queue. That is the mechanism behind the word, and it is the part you should check rather than take on trust.
WattMate is written for WA conditions specifically — not adapted from an east-coast template — because rebates, tariffs, and what suits a Perth roof are different questions in every state.
